Repeal the Sodomy Law

To: Rep. Witwer, Sen. Anthony, Gov. Whitmer

From: A constituent in Potterville, MI

November 5

Repeal the sodomy law still on the books in this state. Though the Supreme Court struck down such laws in Lawrence v. Texas in 2003, leaving this statute in place sends a clear message to LGBTQ+ residents that their lives and relationships are not fully recognized by their own government. Dead letter or not, it causes harm. Keeping this law on the books is not a neutral act. It signals that discrimination is acceptable, and it creates a legal shadow that can be exploited in custody disputes, employment decisions, and housing cases. Other states have moved to clean up their codes. This state should do the same. I expect my elected officials to act on this without delay.
