The DOJ's recent legal opinion undermining Olmstead v. L.C. is an insult to every American living with a disability. I need you to publicly condemn this opinion and push back against any effort to weaken federal enforcement of the integration mandate under the ADA.
For 25 years, Olmstead has been the legal backbone protecting people with disabilities from being forced into institutions — places that isolate, segregate, and strip people of their dignity. The DOJ's own opinion admits it is "out of step" with how federal courts have understood Olmstead. That's not a legal argument. That's an admission that this is a political choice to abandon enforcement, not a legitimate reinterpretation of the law. Rights mean nothing when the government refuses to uphold them, and disabled people will bear the cost of that refusal in the most personal and painful ways.
Olmstead is still Supreme Court precedent. The ADA and Section 504 are still law. No one belongs in an institution when they can live in their community with the right supports. Disabled people deserve to be part of their communities — not hidden away. I expect you to stand up and say so clearly.
