Protect Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act

To: Sen. Gillibrand, Rep. Mannion, Sen. Schumer

From: A verified voter in Syracuse, NY

May 3

I'm asking you to oppose any legislation that weakens or repeals Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act. This protection is essential for free speech online and the functioning of the modern internet. Section 230 allows websites to host user-generated content without being held liable for everything their users post. Without it, platforms would face two choices: either ban all user content to avoid lawsuits, or abandon moderation entirely because reviewing every post would create liability. Both outcomes would devastate online speech. Small forums, comment sections, and community sites would disappear overnight because they can't afford legal teams to review millions of posts. Repealing Section 230 won't just hurt big tech companies. It will silence ordinary people who rely on online platforms to organize, share information, and speak freely. Local news sites would have to disable comments. Nonprofits couldn't host discussion boards. Even small businesses with customer reviews would face constant legal threats. The internet thrives because individuals can publish and share ideas without every platform becoming a publisher legally responsible for billions of posts. Section 230 makes that possible. Defend it.
