I am writing as a Michigan constituent who is deeply concerned about the ongoing government shutdown and reports that Democratic leadership may consider a short-term deal that fails to protect vital programs and working families. I urge you to stand firm. Michigan cannot afford another compromise that trades away the security and stability of the people you represent. The government has been shut down since October 1, 2025, because Congress has not passed full appropriations for fiscal year 2026. This is now the longest shutdown in modern history. Across Michigan, the effects are visible and painful. More than 1.4 million Michigan residents rely on SNAP benefits to keep food on the table. November payments were delayed and reduced by half. Thousands of federal and contract workers have gone without pay for more than a month. Health care costs are rising as enhanced premium tax credits under the Affordable Care Act are set to expire. These are not partisan issues — they are basic matters of survival for millions of Americans. This shutdown is not governance. It is gridlock driven by political ambition at the expense of ordinary people. The individuals who rely on these programs are not bargaining tools. They are veterans, teachers, parents, and seniors who deserve better than to be caught in another cycle of political brinkmanship. I am frustrated and angry watching Washington prioritize power over people. I expect more from my representatives. The President serves the people. Congress serves the people. Those responsibilities are sacred. Ending this shutdown cannot come at the cost of giving in to demands that undermine health care, food assistance, and public services. Michigan needs you to hold the line, defend the programs that keep families afloat, and refuse to legitimize the politics of threats and chaos. Leadership means standing firm when it matters most. If you show the courage to do that now, Michigan will remember.
