Restore Houston's Rainbow Crosswalks and Repeal the Bathroom Ban
Restore the rainbow crosswalks on Westheimer and Taft, and work to repeal the bathroom ban Governor Abbott signed into law. These aren't minor policy disputes — they are direct attacks on the visibility and dignity of Houston's LGBTQ+ community.
METRO removed those crosswalks last fall under a state directive, erasing a landmark that meant real safety and belonging to thousands of Houstonians in Montrose. Visibility matters. When the state strips away symbols of inclusion, it sends a message that LGBTQ+ people are not welcome in public life. That message is wrong, and you have the power to push back against it.
The bathroom ban is worse. Forcing transgender men and women out of public restrooms doesn't protect anyone — it exposes them to harassment and danger. This is a cruel, unnecessary law that solves no real problem. Houston's LGBTQ+ community is already navigating a harder climate, with Pride Houston losing over $180,000 in corporate sponsorships this year alone. The community doesn't need its elected officials piling on. It needs them to stand up.
