Investigation Required: U.S. Policy Toward Russia While Russia Aids Iran
To: Rep. Carter, Sen. Cornyn, Pres. Trump, Sen. Cruz
From: A constituent in Leander, TX
March 9
I am writing to demand immediate congressional oversight into a glaring and dangerous contradiction in current U.S. policy: the United States appears to be easing pressure on Russia while Russia continues to assist Iran—an adversary actively threatening American forces and interests. Reports indicate that the United States has suspended sanctions on Russian oil, a move that allows additional revenue to flow into the state controlled by Vladimir Putin. At the same time, Russia’s military cooperation with Iran has been widely documented. Iranian drones used in modern conflicts have contained Russian components, and Russia has purchased and deployed Iranian drones extensively in its war in Ukraine. Yet when confronted with these facts in a televised exchange, U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright dismissed confirmed intelligence about Russia-Iran cooperation as mere “rumors.” That response directly contradicts the public record and raises serious concerns about transparency and accountability inside the administration. The contradiction is stark: • Russia and Iran maintain active military cooperation involving drone technology and weapons systems. • Iranian drones linked to this partnership are part of ongoing conflicts affecting U.S. interests. • Meanwhile, U.S. policy decisions are allowing new revenue streams to flow into Russia’s economy. In practical terms, this means American policy may be helping finance the government of Vladimir Putin while that same government maintains strategic cooperation with Iran. This is not a minor policy inconsistency—it is a national security question that demands immediate congressional scrutiny. Congress must urgently determine: 1. Why sanctions on Russian oil were suspended or relaxed. 2. What current U.S. intelligence assessments conclude about Russia’s military cooperation with Iran. 3. Whether U.S. economic policy is indirectly strengthening a government aiding an adversary. 4. Why administration officials are publicly dismissing intelligence-supported reporting as “rumors.” The American people should not be left wondering whether their government is simultaneously confronting and financially empowering the same geopolitical actors. Congress has both the authority and the responsibility to investigate policies that could undermine U.S. security interests. Immediate hearings and public explanations are warranted. Anything less signals that Congress is willing to overlook one of the most serious foreign policy contradictions in recent memory. I urge you to act now.
