I am writing to call for immediate action following a clear annexation attempt in northern Gaza, a move that marks the ongoing ethnic cleansing and displacement of thousands of Palestinians from their land.
The Israeli Broadcast Authority has confirmed Israel’s military will prohibit displaced residents from returning to northern Gaza, solidifying the intent to forcibly and permanently remove Palestinians from cities in the north—an act that constitutes a war crime under international law.
For weeks, Israeli forces have bombarded northern Gaza with relentless airstrikes and ground operations, leaving northern Gaza in ruins. An estimated 95,000 to 400,000 civilians remain trapped in this region under the blockade, including those at Kamal Adwan Hospital, where medical staff and patients face death due to the Israeli siege. Isolated from critical supplies, their calls for immediate intervention remain unanswered.
Israel claims to offer “safe passage” out of the north, but Palestinians attempting to evacuate risk being shot by Israeli snipers, and “safe zones” have proven anything but secure. Meanwhile, rescue teams are unable to reach certain areas due to destroyed infrastructure, leaving residents to die beneath rubble or in the streets.
This forced removal of Palestinians and destruction of their homes is an egregious violation of international law and constitutes ethnic cleansing.
Israel must also be sanctioned for its crimes. A full arms embargo and a two-way trade embargo must be enforced until Israel ceases its illegal occupation, blockade and human rights violations in the region; this will also add pressure for a ceasefire. Recognising the State of Palestine and supporting the prosecution of war crimes is essential.
I look forward to your commitment to upholding international law through these actions.
