As a proud Philadelphian and daily SEPTA rider, I’m writing to ask that you save this great asset of our city and surrounding communities. I’ve relied on the El to get to work for many years and the 5, 25, and 39 bus routes to patronize local businesses outside my immediate neighborhood. The proposed service cuts will doom public transit in our area, hindering SEPTA’s ability to increase revenue.
Fare evasion is a symptom of a failure to support those in financial need, not a burden to be placed on fare-paying SEPTA riders who rely on existing service schedules and routes for daily life. State republicans may not care that they’re dooming Philadelphians to a grid-locked future, but they should at least care that this proposal offers no future for SEPTA financial security. We should be moving towards a more people-first metropolis, not a car-first parking lot of a city. Failure to properly fund SEPTA is a wasteful, irresponsible decision that spits in the face of the citizens of southeastern PA.
