I am writing to express my deep concern and opposition to the recent decision by the Department of Interior to open the entire 1.56 million acres of the Coastal Plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) to oil and gas leasing. This move, which rescinds the previous administration's more limited drilling program, poses a severe threat to one of our nation's most pristine wilderness areas.
The Trump-era plan for maximum oil and gas development in ANWR is a step backward in our fight against climate change and our duty to protect vulnerable ecosystems. This decision not only endangers the delicate balance of wildlife in the region but also disregards the rights and cultural traditions of indigenous communities who have been stewards of this land for generations.
Secretary Doug Burgum's announcement is particularly troubling as it comes alongside other harmful decisions, such as issuing permits for the Ambler Road and reaffirming leases to the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority. These actions collectively represent a significant assault on our environmental protections and climate commitments.
As Earthjustice Attorney Erik Grafe rightly points out, this decision threatens wildlife, cultural traditions, and exacerbates the climate crisis. The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is home to polar bears, caribou, and millions of migratory birds. Allowing extensive drilling in this area would irreparably damage their habitats and disrupt critical ecosystems.
I urge you to take immediate action to reverse this decision and reinstate stronger protections for ANWR. We must prioritize long-term environmental sustainability over short-term economic gains from fossil fuel extraction. Please support legislation that would permanently protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from oil and gas development and invest in renewable energy alternatives that do not compromise our natural heritage.
The stakes are too high to allow this ecologically vital area to be exploited. Your leadership is crucial in safeguarding ANWR for future generations and upholding our nation's commitment to environmental stewardship and climate action. I look forward to hearing about the steps you will take to protect this irreplaceable wilderness.
