To: Rep. Moolenaar, Sen. Slotkin, Sen. Peters

From: A constituent in Rockford, MI

April 24

I am a voting constituent writing to urge immediate legislative action to protect the editorial independence of Stars and Stripes and restore its ombudsman, following the Pentagon’s recent dismissal of Jacqueline Smith. As detailed in Smith’s April 23rd column, "The Pentagon is trying to silence me," her removal is a direct assault on the journalistic integrity of a publication that has served our troops since the Civil War. The ombudsman role was congressionally mandated in 1990 to provide oversight and ensure our service members receive unfiltered news, free from political interference. The Pentagon’s move to focus the paper on "warfighting" while stripping away civilian staff and wire services threatens to transform this storied institution into a mere propaganda machine. Our men and women in uniform deserve the same First Amendment protections they defend. They require a credible news source, not a sanitized public relations feed. I urge you to intervene by restoring the ombudsman to her position and passing legislation to codify the editorial independence of Stars and Stripes within the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). We must ensure that the Pentagon cannot silence those tasked with speaking truth to power.
