The Tuskegee Dialysis Center is at Immediate Risk of Closing

To: Gov. Ivey, Sen. Roberts, Rep. DuBose

From: A verified voter in Birmingham, AL

February 19

The Tuskegee Dialysis Center has just announced that they will be forced to close in 30 days. This is not a decision being made locally, but a corporate decision from their parent company. The Tuskegee center is operated by a company called Fresenius, headquartered in Massachusetts. This may be framed as a “business decision” by Fresenius, but for Tuskegee it is about saving lives and ensuring our citizens can access critical care. The Tuskegee Fresenius center currently serves nearly 50 patients who depend on it multiple times a week for life sustaining dialysis treatment. Missing treatment and traveling long distances several times a week is not realistic and puts their health at risk. For them, having a facility locally is the difference between life and death. Tuskegee cannot afford to lose this center.
