Stop abdicating your duties

To: Sen. Collins

From: A verified voter in Portland, ME

June 5

I write to you with great concern for this country. I cannot believe the senate has let this president get away with so much. A slush fund for people who attacked the capitol while trying to peacefully transfer power. A congress filled with people who STILL refuse to admit he lost the 2020 election. Civil rights taken away, districts being gerrymandered annually with the blessing of the “supreme” court, the president invading counties and removing heads of state and launching us into a completely unnecessary war to distract from the fact that his name is all over the Epstein files. And what have you done to check this unabashed power grab? Is it not the job of congress to pass the budget and determine where money goes? Is it not congress’ job to declare war?? Why have you all abdicated this power to the executive? In an act of cowardice to keep your cozy jobs?? Is there anybody with any kind of integrity in the Republican Party in congress who will speak truth to power?? I mean my god what will it take to do your job? You are now part of the most impotent congress in history, congratulations. When this American experiment reaches its 250th year you can say, well, it was a good run for democracy. And you can apparently rest easy knowing you did next to nothing to stop the death of our democracy. You have obviously lost my vote, but I would encourage you, and all of your colleagues to look 50 years in the future and imagine what historians will say about you. Let’s not forget how the Nazis were voted into power, and incrementally tore down every democratic norm as well. Attacking the press, using the DOJ to prosecute political opponents, suing universities and law firms who even think about questioning you. This is not Democracy and you and your colleagues have not been good stewards of it. If you all won’t stand up to the president you should resign in shame. At least the republicans of the Nixon error had a sense of right and wrong and were willing to hold him accountable. It’s inconceivable to us now that bugging a democratic headquarter is a bigger offense than rape or sexual assault of a child. So please, I’m dying to know, what do you see when you look in the mirror?
