The president's plan to impose hefty tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada and China would have devastating consequences for the economy and place an undue burden on working families and vulnerable populations. These sweeping tariffs will drive up prices on essential goods and disrupt vital supply chains, leading to higher costs that will ultimately be borne by American consumers and businesses. We should pursue fair trade policies through diplomacy and negotiation rather than escalating tensions with reckless tariff actions that risk sparking a harmful trade war. Instead of punitive measures, I urge taking a more measured approach that protects American jobs and economic interests while respecting our partnerships with key trading allies. Tariffs are a blunt instrument that often backfire, making U.S. products less competitive globally. There are better ways to address legitimate concerns over immigration and border security that don't involve harmful economic self-sabotage.
