**Oppose Military Operations Against Iran and Support Immediate Ceasefire**
I am writing to urge you to take immediate action to oppose the ongoing military operations against Iran, known as Operation Epic Fury, and to demand that Congress reassert its constitutional authority over matters of war.
President Trump announced major combat operations against Iran on Saturday without congressional authorization. This military action, conducted jointly with Israel and involving U.S. aircraft and Tomahawk cruise missiles, targets military and government sites across Iran and could last several days. The strikes have already resulted in devastating civilian casualties, including 85 students killed and 60 injured in an attack on a girls' elementary school in Minab, southern Iran. These are children who had nothing to do with geopolitical conflicts.
The operation has triggered a dangerous escalation across the Middle East. Iran has launched retaliatory missiles toward Israel and U.S. military bases in Bahrain, Qatar, and the UAE. American service members are now at risk, and Trump himself acknowledged that American casualties may occur. This spiral of violence threatens to engulf the entire region in a broader war that will cost countless lives and destabilize global security.
Senator Tim Kaine has already called for the Senate to return to Washington to vote on a war powers resolution. I strongly support this action. The Constitution grants Congress, not the president, the power to declare war. While Secretary of State Marco Rubio briefed the Gang of 8, a briefing is not authorization. Congress must vote on whether to commit American forces to this conflict.
Trump's call for regime change in Iran and his targeting of Iranian leadership, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, represents a dramatic escalation that could lead to prolonged military engagement. Even Oman's Foreign Minister noted that active negotiations have been undermined by these strikes.
I urge you to publicly oppose these military operations, support an immediate ceasefire, and vote for any war powers resolution that would require congressional authorization for continued military action against Iran. American lives and regional stability depend on congressional oversight.
