I am writing because what happened in Minneapolis on January 7 is not something I can ignore or rationalize. A U.S. citizen, Renee Nicole Good, was shot and killed by an ICE agent on a neighborhood street, and nothing about the government’s response makes me feel safe as an American. She was not wanted for anything. She was a legal observer. She was unarmed. Multiple videos show her trying to leave the scene out of fear, with her vehicle clearly turning away from the ICE agent. Yet she was shot and left to die while agents kept a registered physician on scene away. That is not “an incident.” That is a killing. And if this can happen in broad daylight to a citizen doing nothing wrong, then none of us are safe. What has followed is equally alarming. Federal officials immediately labeled her a “domestic terrorist” and claimed “self-defense,” despite video evidence and despite local authorities stating that those claims are not supported by the facts. The President and Vice President repeated those statements publicly before any independent review. Minnesota officials have rejected the federal account, citing inconsistencies and lack of evidence. This is not normal law enforcement. This is a federal agency killing an unarmed American, blocking medical aid, and then trying to control the narrative that does not match what the public can see. And when the highest offices in the country repeat that narrative without question, it tells people like me that the truth no longer matters. I am asking Congress to step in because the public deserves transparency, accountability, and the truth. An unarmed woman died, and the government responsible for her death is asking us to believe a story that contradicts what we can see with our own eyes. That is terrifying. It sets a precedent that any American can be killed by federal agents and then blamed for their own death and even worse, be labeled as something you are not. Congress must immediately investigate this killing, obtain all video and communication from DHS and ICE, and determine whether federal officials knowingly spread a false narrative. The agent who fired the shots must be held accountable, and Renee’s family deserves justice. An American citizen is dead. The facts presented by federal authorities do not align with the evidence. If this is not investigated fully and publicly, it will send the message that any civilian can be killed by federal agents and then blamed afterward. I am urging you to treat this with the seriousness it demands. The safety of the public and the legitimacy of the government’s own statements depends on what Congress does next. I urge you to act immediately.
