Where is the public education funding you promised?!
To: Sen. Nichols
From: A constituent in Huntington, TX
May 11
Where is the public education funding you promised? We expected you to do your job and fund our public schools. But now with less than 30 days left in this session no public school funding package has made it through both chambers.
Instead of investing in our students and staff, the Senate fast-tracked a private school voucher scheme that could drain $1 billion from the state budget. That is money that could go directly to the classrooms. While Texas public schools are laying off educators, closing campuses and cutting vital services, charter schools and elite private school stand to cash in! One more way of giving to the haves and taking from the have-nots.
This is getting really old, how our elected representatives are slashing programs for those at the lower income strata to reward the 1% at the top.
HB2 needs a committee hearing ASAP to work to join the best parts of both chambers’ proposals into a final funding bill that:
- [ ] Increases the basic allotment for our public schools and ensures raises for all public school employees.
- [ ] Guarantees Teacher pay raises on top of that base funding boost that brings Texas to the national average for Teacher pay.
- [ ] Funds full-day pre-K for all Texas students.
- [ ] Makes meaningful investments in special education and other targeted student allotments .
It is time for the Senate to get busy and do their job. Please advocate for the people who elected you. And the children are our future. Please get to work for them.
