Reject Bill Jeopardizing Nonprofits and Civil Liberties

To: Sen. Gillibrand, Sen. Schumer

From: A constituent in Athens, NY

November 21

I am writing to urge you to vote against H.R. 9495, a deeply concerning bill that would grant the executive branch sweeping authority to revoke the tax-exempt status of nonprofit organizations based solely on accusations of wrongdoing. This legislation poses a grave threat to free speech, dissent, and the vital work of civil society groups across the ideological spectrum. A coalition of nearly 300 organizations spanning civil liberties, religious, reproductive health, immigrant rights, human rights, racial justice, LGBTQ+, environmental, and educational sectors has voiced strong opposition to this bill. Their concerns are well-founded. H.R. 9495 would empower the executive branch to effectively dismantle any nonprofit it deems problematic, including news outlets, universities, and civil liberties groups, by stripping them of their tax-exempt status without due process. This unprecedented expansion of executive power undermines fundamental democratic values and principles. It enables the potential harassment and suppression of organizations solely for expressing views or engaging in activities that the administration may find objectionable. Such a blatant infringement on free speech and the right to dissent cannot be tolerated in a free society. I implore you to stand firmly against this assault on civil liberties and protect the ability of nonprofit organizations to carry out their crucial work without fear of retaliation or political interference. A vibrant civil society is essential to a healthy democracy, and H.R. 9495 represents a dangerous step toward authoritarianism. Please vote no on this misguided legislation.
