Do not shield fossil fuel companies from liability for the havoc they have wreaked! As a constituent, I am writing to ask you to actively oppose congressional efforts to shield the fossil fuel industry from facing legal and legislative consequences for its role in the climate crisis. I urge you to OPPOSE the so-called “Stop Climate Shakedowns Act of 2026,” recently introduced by Representative Harriet Hageman and Senator Ted Cruz. Additionally, please stay alert for any efforts to introduce immunity for the fossil fuel industry into must-pass bills, such as previous appropriations restrictions, and ensure that such provisions do not move forward. Climate disasters like wildfires, floods, and heatwaves are growing more extreme, causing loss of life, infrastructure damage, and mounting costs for states and local communities. Today, one in four people in the United States live in a state, county, municipality, or tribal nation that is suing major fossil fuel corporations to hold them accountable for climate deception and the massive resulting harms. Additionally, a growing number of US state legislatures are considering climate superfund laws, which would require the corporations responsible for the most heat-trapping emissions to pay their share for the growing costs to protect public infrastructure from climate-driven damages. It is unacceptable for oil and gas companies to evade democratic processes that would give communities the opportunity to hold them responsible for their actions. And it is unfair and unsustainable for our state’s taxpayers to be solely responsible for the mounting costs of climate disasters that these companies have fueled through their decades of deceit and delay while raking in massive profits. Please do everything in your power to prevent sweeping liability evasion for the fossil fuel industry. I urge you to oppose the “Stop Climate Shakedowns Act of 2026” and any future efforts to grant legal immunity to the fossil fuel industry. Thanks.
