I’m writing as a constituent and a human being deeply disturbed by the recent opening of the so-called “Alligator Alcatraz” detention center in the Everglades.
This is not a political issue—it is a moral one. Detaining migrants, many of whom are fleeing violence and poverty, in tents surrounded by dangerous wetlands, extreme heat, and without proper shelter, medical care, or oversight is inhumane and unacceptable. The use of environmental hazards—alligators, flooding, and isolation—as a deterrent is not security. It’s cruelty.
We have a responsibility to treat every person—regardless of citizenship status—with dignity, fairness, and basic compassion. Detaining people in such conditions without trial, in an ecologically fragile zone, is not justice. It’s a warning sign. History is watching, and so are your constituents.
I am calling on you to:
• Demand an independent investigation into conditions at the Everglades detention site.
• Pressure federal agencies to halt transfers to the facility immediately.
• Support legislation that ends indefinite detention of migrants and protects vulnerable populations from environmental and systemic abuse.
We cannot let cruelty become policy. We cannot look back in ten years and say, “We didn’t know.” We do know. And we need leaders with the courage to speak and act now.
