The American people have expressed significant doubts about President Biden's ability to defeat Donald Trump in the 2024 election. As his party's nominee, the president should carefully consider the concerns raised by voters across the country. While he claims to have overwhelming support, multiple polls show a substantial portion of Democrats believe the party has a better chance of winning with a different candidate. Biden's insistence on running for re-election, despite these concerns, risks dividing Democrats and jeopardizing the crucial goal of preventing Trump's return to power. Putting the nation's interests first may require Biden to make the selfless decision to withdraw and unite the party behind a stronger nominee who can resoundingly defeat Trump's threat to democracy. A contested convention or protracted primary could prove disastrous, as happened in 2016 when Republican infighting boosted Trump. By stepping aside now, Biden can bring Democrats together and give the nation its best chance to uphold democratic values.
