Oppose SB3 – Protect Texans’ Rights & Resources

To: Rep. Martinez Fischer

From: A verified voter in San Antonio, TX

February 25

I urge you to oppose Senate Bill 3 (SB3), which seeks to ban all consumable hemp products containing THC in Texas. This bill disregards public opinion, wastes state resources, and disproportionately harms communities of color. 1. Texans Support Decriminalization A majority of Texans favor reforming marijuana laws: • 69% support decriminalization. • 62% support full legalization. Passing SB3 ignores the will of the people. (Source: KHOU) 2. Unfair Criminalization Though white and non-white Texans use marijuana at similar rates, Black and brown Texans are between 4 and 34 times more likely to be arrested for possession. A single charge can mean losing access to jobs, education, and housing—penalties that last a lifetime. 3. Enforcing Marijuana Laws is a Waste of Money In 2010 alone, Texas spent $250 million enforcing marijuana laws, mostly for simple possession. That money could be used for schools, infrastructure, tax relief, or public safety instead of arresting nonviolent individuals. 4. Police Should Focus on Real Crime Every hour spent arresting a veteran with PTSD or a cancer patient using THC for relief is an hour not spent preventing theft, solving violent crimes, or protecting our communities. We should prioritize real threats, not low-level drug offenses. 5. Private Interests Over Public Good This bill feels less like a public safety measure and more like a push to fill private prisons for investors. Texans deserve legislation that serves their best interests, not corporate profits. Please stand with your constituents and oppose SB3. Let’s focus on smart, fair policies that reflect the will of the people.
