I am writing to urge you to support impeachment proceedings against members of the Trump administration for their betrayal of our NATO allies and abandonment of America's security commitments. The administration's National Security Strategy declares that the era of the United States "propping up the entire world order like Atlas" is over, signaling a dangerous retreat from the alliances that have kept America safe for 75 years. This represents a fundamental breach of our treaty obligations under Article 5 of the NATO treaty, which requires allies to defend each other if attacked. A senior defense official reported that conversations about these security guarantees with American officials have grown "awkward," revealing the administration's unwillingness to honor commitments that have prevented major wars since 1949. The consequences are already severe. US NATO Ambassador Matthew Whitaker's qualified statements about Article 5 being "ironclad" while demanding Europeans handle conventional defense themselves have created dangerous ambiguity that emboldens adversaries. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau criticized EU countries for prioritizing their own defense industries, even as the administration undermines the security partnership that made transatlantic defense cooperation possible. European military chiefs and intelligence agencies now warn that an attack from Russia could come as early as 2028, yet this administration is accelerating NATO's collapse rather than strengthening it. Germany's Chancellor Friedrich Merz called parts of Trump's National Security Strategy "unacceptable," and former German general staff officer Roderich Kiesewetter described it as a "slap in the face," declaring that "the era of the security guarantee is over." When our closest allies use such language, it reflects the catastrophic damage to American credibility and security. Abandoning NATO allies constitutes a high crime against American national security interests. I urge you to initiate impeachment proceedings and vote to remove administration officials responsible for this betrayal before irreparable harm is done to our alliances and our safety.
