House File 880 should not become law, as it would unfairly restrict the ability of libraries to advocate for themselves and their communities through professional organizations like the American Library Association. Libraries provide essential resources and services that enrich society, and limiting their freedom of association would undermine their autonomy and capacity to meet evolving public needs. The ALA offers crucial support, training, and representation that empower libraries to uphold intellectual freedom, literacy, and democratic principles. Restraining libraries' right to advocate through the ALA hinders their fundamental role as pillars of free speech and open discourse. Instead of imposing constraints, we should strengthen these vital institutions that contribute immensely to an informed citizenry. Maintaining libraries' ability to engage in advocacy allows them a voice in shaping policies that affect operations and communities they serve.
