Demand Congressional Oversight of Presidential War Powers and Domestic Abuses

I am writing to urge you to establish immediate congressional oversight of President Trump's military actions and domestic use of executive power. The current situation demands that Congress fulfill its constitutional duty as a check on presidential authority.
President Trump has launched a major regional war against Iran without congressional authorization, continuing a pattern of governing outside constitutional boundaries. He has previously taxed without Congress, disbursed funds to farmers without Congress, and taken stakes in private corporations without Congress. He has broken anti-corruption and anti-bribery laws, attempted to imprison members of Congress for making a video about legal duty, and invoked emergency powers without justification.
The domestic threats are equally alarming. Federal agencies have occupied U.S. cities, making arrests without due process and killing citizens without accountability. Just days before the war began, Trump denounced six Supreme Court members as being under foreign influence after they ruled his tariffs unconstitutional. Some of his supporters are now circulating plans to use emergency powers to seize presidential control of the 2026 congressional elections. The genuine military emergency provides Trump with powers that federal courts historically defer to during wartime, creating dangerous opportunities for abuse.
While some of Trump's autocratic moves have been thwarted by courts and public pressure, including his March 2025 executive order to control state elections, he now operates with a more compliant congressional majority and courts that tend to defer during wartime. History shows no president has demonstrated himself less trustworthy with power.
I am asking you to join with colleagues to create dedicated oversight committees focused on both the conduct of this war and the protection of democratic institutions at home. The Constitution requires Congress to serve as an independent check on executive power, not as an enabler of presidential overreach. Your constituents need you to remember your principles and act now.
