Local investigators were frozen out, evidence was centralized, and transparency was treated as a threat rather than a necessity. If the officer acted lawfully, an investigation would prove it. Investigations do not presume guilt. They protect legitimacy and public trust. Only those afraid of the truth prevent scrutiny. Shielding law enforcement agencies from accountability does not strengthen them. It corrodes them. Real law enforcement depends on public trust, which depends on accountability. This is not an isolated incident. Earlier this year, public corruption prosecutors also resigned rather than drop politically convenient cases. The pattern is clear: the law applies until it becomes inconvenient, then it gets bent, buried, or ignored.
