This massive budget reconciliation bill, H.R. 1 or the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act," is a reckless and misguided piece of legislation that will inflict immense harm on American families and communities. It makes deep, unjustified cuts to vital social safety net programs like Medicaid, SNAP food assistance, and student loan protections, all to finance trillions of dollars in tax cuts skewed towards the wealthy elite. The legislation would decimate access to affordable healthcare by imposing harsh work requirements on Medicaid and increasing costs for Medicare recipients. It slashes hunger assistance through draconian SNAP cuts at a time of rising food insecurity. The bill also undermines education by taxing university endowments, weakening student loan programs, and diverting funds away from public schools through a new private voucher scheme. These attacks on healthcare, hunger relief, and education for working families are simply unconscionable, especially to fund further tax breaks for the wealthy and corporations after the massive 2017 tax cuts. Furthermore, the bill rolls back critical climate policies, banning clean energy incentives while expanding fossil fuel extraction on public lands. It shockingly defunds the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, removing vital consumer safeguards. The inclusion of anti-democratic provisions overriding court authority and prohibiting state AI regulation for a decade is also extremely concerning. This overtly partisan legislation is fiscally reckless, morally bankrupt, and destructive to core American values and institutions. I strongly urge you to reject the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act" and instead advance policies that invest in families, communities, and a sustainable future for all Americans.
