Stop the USPS from turning mail trucks into a nationwide surveillance network. The agency has quietly launched a pilot program in Washington, DC, installing Next Base cameras on 100 postal vehicles to continuously scan roads, map sidewalks, and capture license plates in 4K — with plans to scale this across every community in the country. That is not a safety feature. That is infrastructure for mass surveillance, built on the back of a public institution Americans trust.
The USPS's own letter to NALC president Brian Renfroe admits the entire point is to "leverage the Postal Service's unique ability to collect this valuable data due to the scale and frequency with which our fleet of postal vehicles travel the streets of every community." No legislation authorized this. No public comment was invited. The agency simply partnered with a private dashcam company and started filming. Congress needs to intervene now — demand a full halt to this pilot, hold hearings on what data is being collected and who can access it, and pass clear statutory limits before this program expands beyond DC.
