I am writing as your constituent to ask you to withhold support for advancing legislation or confirming nominees until the President rescinds his decision to install Bill Pulte as Acting Director of National Intelligence.
American history offers clear warnings about the dangers of misusing government secrecy. From the early twentieth century through the Cold War, intelligence and law enforcement powers were at times turned against political dissenters. In response to those abuses, Congress—on a bipartisan basis—established guardrails after Watergate to ensure that national security institutions would operate independently of partisan pressure. Those protections have been essential in maintaining public trust and safeguarding democratic norms.
The current appointment threatens to unravel those standards. Mr. Pulte does not possess the experience or qualifications expected of someone overseeing the nation’s intelligence community. More troubling, his recent conduct shows a willingness to use public authority in ways that blur the line between governance and political retaliation. That combination raises serious concerns about how he will handle access to highly sensitive intelligence. Has he ever even had a security clearance?
The Director of National Intelligence plays a critical role in coordinating agencies, delivering objective assessments, and protecting the country from evolving threats. This position demands expertise, discipline, and a demonstrated commitment to impartiality. Filling it with someone lacking those qualities risks weakening both national security and institutional credibility. We've already seen what disastrous outcomes occur when unqualified people are put in charge of agencies they have no business running...just look at the Secretary of Defense and the Iran War..he's run us out of critical air defense ammo!
The Senate has tools at its disposal to respond to this unqualified appointment. Lawmakers have recently shown that they can influence executive actions by conditioning legislative progress. I urge you to apply that same principle here by declining to move forward on key measures or nominations until this appointment is reversed.
This moment calls for a firm defense of the norms that protect our system of government. Upholding the independence of the intelligence community is not about party advantage; it is about preserving the rule of law and ensuring that national security powers are not misused.
Thank you for your consideration.
