Protect Historic Preservation Laws From Trump's Demolition Agenda

You need to act now to stop the Trump administration from gutting the National Historic Preservation Act. On July 25, the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation — stacked with 21 Trump appointees — voted to advance sweeping revisions to Section 106, the 60-year-old provision requiring federal agencies to consider impacts on historic properties. If this rule takes effect, more than 100,000 properties and 1.8 million sites, structures, and districts on the National Register lose their protections. The damage goes far beyond paperwork. These revisions would strip the legal requirement to consult tribal governments before opening Chaco Canyon — a UNESCO World Heritage site sacred to Southwest tribes — to oil and gas drilling. They would clear the path for a triumphal arch near Arlington National Cemetery that ranking members of both House and Senate committees have called "stone-cold illegal." And the administration is claiming the White House Office of Administration is exempt from historic preservation law entirely, a precedent that, as Greg Werkheiser of Cultural Heritage Partners warned, would let any president pull any project from agency oversight. Block these NHPA revisions. Oppose the Chaco Canyon drilling plan. Push back on the claim that the White House can simply opt out of federal preservation law.
