Demand Investigation and Closure of Camp East Montana Detention Facility

I am writing to demand immediate action regarding the Camp East Montana migrant detention facility at Fort Bliss in El Paso. As your constituent, I refuse to allow my tax dollars to fund a facility where reports document torture, homicide, and systematic human rights violations. Three people have died at this facility in just two months of operation. Geraldo Lunas Campos died on January 3rd in what an autopsy ruled a homicide caused by asphyxia due to neck and torso compression. Witnesses reported seeing guards choking him and hearing him say "I can't breathe." Francisco Gaspar-Andrés died on December 3rd from liver and kidney failure, and Victor Manuel Diaz was found dead on January 14th. These deaths occurred at a facility that violated more than 60 federal detention standards during its first 50 days of operation according to ICE's own inspections. During a recent visit, US Rep. Veronica Escobar identified at least 2 cases of tuberculosis and 18 cases of Covid-19. The ACLU and Human Rights Watch documented illegal attempts to coerce detainees into signing deportation agreements under threat of violence. Thirty-six Texas Democratic state legislators, led by Rep. Ana-María Rodríguez Ramos, have already called for an investigation. I urge you to support this effort and take immediate steps to halt federal funding for this facility. No one should die in custody on American soil due to abuse and neglect. I expect you to prioritize constituent welfare over private contractor profits and ensure accountability for these documented violations of federal law and constitutional rights.
