Oppose the MEGA Act's Voter Restrictions and State Authority Overreach

I am writing to urge you to oppose the Make Elections Great Again Act introduced on January 29th, 2026. This legislation represents a dangerous federal overreach that undermines states' constitutional authority to administer their own elections while imposing restrictions that would disenfranchise millions of eligible voters. The MEGA Act would require proof of citizenship for voter registration and photo ID to vote, despite tens of millions of Americans lacking the necessary documentation. This burden falls disproportionately on people with disabilities, younger voters, and Black and Hispanic communities. These requirements create barriers to participation that far exceed any legitimate security concern, particularly given that election fraud in the United States is vanishingly rare. Beyond documentation requirements, this bill would force states to discard mail-in ballots received after polls close on election day, ban universal vote by mail systems, and prohibit ranked choice voting in federal elections. These provisions strip states of their constitutional prerogative to design election systems that serve their residents' needs. Many states have successfully implemented these voting methods to increase accessibility and participation without compromising security. The financial and administrative costs of implementing these sweeping changes would be substantial for state and local election offices, diverting resources from actual election administration to solve a problem that does not exist. States should retain the flexibility to run elections in ways that reflect their communities' values and needs. I ask that you oppose the MEGA Act and instead support policies that protect every eligible citizen's right to vote while respecting the constitutional framework that grants states authority over election administration. Our democracy is strengthened when we remove barriers to participation, not when we erect new ones based on unfounded claims of widespread fraud.
