An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Preserve free press, oppose FCC's bias monitor proposal

It is clear that the FCC's plan to appoint a "bias monitor" who reports directly to the President raises significant concerns about free speech and government overreach. Requiring a media company to have a political watchdog overseen by the administration is an alarming violation of First Amendment principles. A free and independent press is essential for democracy to function properly. While measures to promote accuracy and reduce disinformation are reasonable, giving the President unchecked influence over a major news outlet crosses a dangerous line. Such a monitor could pressure journalists to self-censor and avoid criticizing those in power. This threatens the media's crucial role as a watchdog over government actions. A commitment to factual reporting is important, but that standard must be upheld through rigorous journalistic ethics and processes - not by allowing politicians to dictate editorial decisions. The American people deserve access to information from diverse, independent sources without fear of retaliation or censorship. Preserving freedom of the press must be a top priority to maintain government accountability.
