URGENT: Support Temporary Protected Status for Haiti

I urge you to support legislation (H.R. 1689) to designate Haiti for Temporary Protected Status (TPS). This bill has passed the House, but appears to be stuck in the Senate since April 16. This bill is a practical, humane response to extraordinary conditions—and it is nowurgent. Between 330,000 and 350,000 Haitians living legally in the United States have just lost their Temporary Protected Status as of August 5, following a Supreme Court ruling that stripped courts of the power to review the administration's decision. These are people who work, pay taxes, care for families, and contribute to their communities. They now face deportation to a country the State Department itself declares too dangerous for travel—a nation ravaged by gang violence, kidnappings, and instability. Work authorization has already expired. Driver's licenses are being revoked. Families are in crisis. The Supreme Court's June decision eliminated judicial oversight of the TPS termination. But Congress has the authority to act. TPS legislation creates a clear, lawful designation that puts protection beyond the reach of administrative whim. It is constitutional, it is Congress's responsibility, and it works. Haitians with TPS status stabilize communities and economies. They fill essential jobs, pay taxes, and allow families to focus on work and education rather than fear. Sudden deportations create chaos—lost workers, disrupted businesses, separated families. Extending protection reduces that harm while allowing people to plan their lives responsibly. The Trump administration's decision to terminate TPS for Haiti is now being litigated on equal protection grounds—whether it was driven by racial animus. The administration singled out Haitians on the campaign trail with false accusations. Yet the Department of Justice is heavily redacting discovery documents, blocking lawyers from building their case. Congress can act where courts cannot. You can restore protection through legislation and ensure that vulnerable people are not sacrificed to executive power unchecked by judicial review. 330,000 to 350,000 people are losing legal status now.
