An open letter to the President & U.S. Congress

Oppose Unconstitutional Budget Cuts and Pocket Recissions

3 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!

I am writing to express my deep concern over the recent budget cuts and pocket recissions that have been proposed. These actions are not only politically motivated but also illegal and unconstitutional. As your constituent, I urge you to take immediate action to oppose these measures and protect our democratic institutions. The use of pocket recissions, which allow the executive branch to unilaterally withhold appropriated funds, undermines the constitutional separation of powers. Congress, not the executive, holds the power of the purse. By allowing these recissions to proceed, we risk setting a dangerous precedent that erodes legislative authority and checks and balances. These budget cuts appear to be driven by political considerations rather than sound fiscal policy. They target programs and agencies without proper evaluation of their effectiveness or the impact on constituents. Such arbitrary reductions in funding can have severe consequences for essential services and the communities that rely on them. Furthermore, the legality of these actions is highly questionable. The Impoundment Control Act of 1974 places strict limits on the executive branch's ability to withhold appropriated funds. Any attempt to circumvent this law through pocket recissions is a clear violation of established legal precedent and congressional intent. I urge you to take the following actions: 1. Publicly denounce these unconstitutional budget cuts and pocket recissions. 2. Work with your colleagues to initiate legal challenges against these actions in federal court. 3. Introduce or support legislation that strengthens congressional oversight of executive spending actions. 4. Hold hearings to investigate the motivations behind these cuts and their potential impacts on our district and the nation. The integrity of our budgetary process and the constitutional balance of powers are at stake. As my representative, I ask that you stand firm against these illegal and politically motivated actions. Our democracy depends on your vigilance and commitment to upholding the Constitution. Thank you for your attention to this critical matter. I look forward to hearing about the steps you will take to address these concerns and protect our democratic institutions.
