Urgent Action Needed to Protect Democracy and Rule of Law

I am writing to express my deep concern about the current state of our democracy and the rule of law in our nation. Recent events have highlighted a disturbing trend of political interference in our justice system that threatens the very foundations of our republic. On October 9, 2025, we witnessed the unprecedented indictment of New York Attorney General Letitia James and former FBI Director James Comey by a Trump-appointed U.S. Attorney, Lindsey Halligan. These indictments appear to be politically motivated retaliation, undermining the integrity of our legal institutions. Attorney General James herself has decried these charges as baseless and a clear weaponization of the justice system for political retribution. The Department of Justice, once a beacon of nonpartisanship, is now being wielded as a tool to protect political allies and persecute perceived enemies. This is a dangerous departure from its intended purpose and violates the principles of equal justice under the law. Furthermore, the President's recent speech to military officials, where he claimed the U.S. faces "a war from within" and suggested using cities as "training grounds" for the military, is deeply troubling. This rhetoric, coupled with attempts to deploy National Guard troops in Chicago and federal agents targeting journalists, represents a clear overreach of executive power and a threat to civil liberties. I urge you to take immediate action to safeguard our democratic institutions. We need robust congressional oversight to investigate these abuses of power and legislation to strengthen the independence of our justice system. The separation of powers must be vigorously defended, and the rights of states to manage their own affairs without unwarranted federal intervention must be protected. It is encouraging to see federal judges and some Republican governors, like Oklahoma's Kevin Stitt, pushing back against these authoritarian tendencies. However, more voices need to join this chorus of dissent. As my representative, I implore you to speak out against these abuses and work tirelessly to restore the checks and balances that are essential to our democracy. The integrity of our nation's legal system and the preservation of our democratic norms are at stake. We must act now to prevent further erosion of these fundamental pillars of our society. Our future as a free and just nation depends on the actions we take today.
