Demand Congressional Action to End Unconstitutional Tariff Chaos

I am writing to demand immediate Congressional action to end the tariff chaos that is damaging our economy and international standing. After the Supreme Court ruled that tariffs levied under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act are unconstitutional, President Trump has defied this ruling by announcing a 10% tariff on foreign imports, then raising it to 15% the following day via social media post. This constitutional crisis requires Congress to assert its authority over trade policy. The economic consequences are already severe. The stock market has fallen sharply due to uncertainty about these tariff threats. Bernd Lange, head of the international trade committee in the European Parliament, described the situation as "pure tariff chaos," and the European Parliament has paused approval of its trade deal with the United States. India has postponed a trip to finalize a trade agreement. These actions by our trading partners directly harm American businesses and workers who depend on stable international commerce. The American people overwhelmingly oppose this approach. An ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos poll found that 64% of Americans disapprove of Trump's handling of tariffs, and 50% believe his policies have hurt the economy versus only 26% who say they helped. Critically, 82% of Americans, including 76% of Republicans, believe the president must obey Supreme Court rulings. Speaker Mike Johnson has acknowledged that Congress has no appetite for these tariffs, calling it "a challenge to find consensus on any path forward on the tariffs, on the legislative side." However, the absence of consensus cannot justify inaction when the president is openly defying the Supreme Court and destabilizing our economy. I urge you to take immediate legislative action to reassert Congressional authority over tariffs, enforce the Supreme Court's ruling, and restore predictability to our trade relationships. Our economic security and constitutional order depend on it.
