In light of the president's recent executive order, I am writing to urge you to support continued federal funding for NPR and PBS. These institutions play a vital role in American society by supporting the arts, providing high-quality childhood educational resources, and serving as trusted, unbiased sources of news.
Public media is a lifeline for the arts, especially in communities where school arts programs have been cut due to budget constraints. Research shows that access to arts education fosters empathy, tolerance, and creativity in young people, and helps bridge gaps between rural and urban communities. NPR and PBS bring the arts into homes nationwide, ensuring that all children, regardless of background, can experience music, theater, and visual arts.
PBS, in particular, is a leader in childhood education. Programs like Sesame Street and Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood have helped generations of children develop literacy, numeracy, and social skills. For many families, especially in underserved areas, PBS is the only free, high-quality educational resource available.
Finally, NPR and PBS provide essential news coverage that is consistently rated as trustworthy and unbiased. In an era of increasing misinformation and polarization, public media is one of the last bastions of fact-based journalism that serves the entire public, not just narrow interest groups. Defunding these organizations would devastate local stations, especially in rural areas, and deprive millions of Americans of reliable news and emergency information.
For about $1.60 per person each year, federal funding ensures that public media continues to enrich our communities, educate our children, and keep our democracy informed. Please stand with your constituents and protect this vital investment.
Thank you for your attention.
