The Trump administration is reportedly set to deploy 2,000 National Guard troops to ICE detention centers nationwide. Some of these detention centers are now at military bases – including Fort Dix, which was opened on July 25th.
This is an escalation of President Trump’s excessive and egregious domestic misuse of the military. Earlier this year, he responded to anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles by deploying thousands of federalized National Guard troops – despite objections from the governor. Now, the administration is reportedly planning to send thousands of troops to ICE detention centers, turbo-charging ICE’s cruel operations to detain and remove immigrants.
They are also planning to equip military bases to detain more immigrants, including adding capacity for 1,000 detainees at Fort Dix in New Jersey. ICE detention facilities are already notorious for violating detainees’ due process rights and dangerous, abusive conditions. Detaining immigrants on military bases will likely make it more difficult for them to access lawyers and see loved ones.
Make no mistake: These actions are dangerous for troops, immigrants, and all of us — and take the National Guard away from their normal jobs, like helping communities facing devastation from natural disasters.
Stop the administration from using military troops and bases for immigration arrests and detention. Stop the misuse of the military.
