Silence is Compliance

Respectfully, I’m furious — I am scared for the people who live in this state. ICE agents are knocking on doors. Families are being ripped from their homes. Warehouses have been purchased and appear poised to become detention facilities within our borders. Whether someone supports federal immigration policy or not, the scale and speed of these actions are creating fear that’s destabilizing whole communities. Children are watching armed and masked officers canvas their neighborhoods from unmarked vehicles. Parents are afraid to go to work. Public spaces are filled with anxiety rather than trust. High schoolers in multiple counties participated in Anti-ICE walkouts. The fear these federal directives impose won’t stay contained to immigrant families — it’ll spread. It’ll erode civic life. You may not control federal agencies, but you do control how Pennsylvania participates. Use every lawful avenue available to limit state cooperation with federal immigration enforcement that undermines due process and civil liberties. Clarify the role of state and local law enforcement. Ensure state resources are not used to expand detention infrastructure. Increase transparency around any coordination occurring within our borders. Speak clearly and publicly about the rights and dignity of every person living in this state. It is absolutely imperative that we resist harm where we have power to. Silence reads as permission. Inaction reads as agreement. Leadership in moments like this — especially in moments like this — requires more than technical compliance with federal authority. It requires moral clarity. Please use your office to protect our communities from the fully unnecessary harm and ensure Pennsylvania does not become complicit in any of the federal government’s actions that violate our neighbors’ rights.
