Did you even read the budget? Did you even stop to consider the long-term damage you just helped cement? Or did you just fold out of fear, prioritizing political convenience over the very democracy you claim to defend?
The Republican Party has made a habit of shutting down the government whenever it suits their interests, forcing through cruel, destructive policies at the expense of working Americans. But when given the same opportunity to leverage a shutdown for actual good—to stop Trump’s blatant power grabs—you blinked. Instead of proving that the Democratic Party has the backbone to take calculated risks in the face of tyranny, you handed the opposition a victory on a silver platter.
Make no mistake: you’ve emboldened them. Your willingness to compromise with fascists instead of holding the line has shown Trump and his enablers that there are no real consequences for their actions. If you can’t stand up now, in this critical moment, what exactly are you waiting for? If you aren’t prepared to take bold action to protect democracy and the American people, then get out of the way. Let progressives—who actually have the will to fight—lead the charge to rebuild this country.
We will not forget this betrayal. Your constituents deserve representatives who will meet the moment with courage, not cowardice. You had a chance to prove that you stand with the people against authoritarianism, and you failed. If you won’t correct course immediately, then don’t expect our support when the consequences of your weakness come crashing down.
