An open letter to the President

Reconsider unwarranted National Guard deployment to California

9 so far! Help us get to 10 signers!

President Trump's decision to deploy the National Guard to Los Angeles undermines the authority of state officials and escalates tensions without justification. Governor Newsom stated that California has the situation under control, yet the president is sending troops against the governor's wishes, creating an unnecessary spectacle and inflaming the protests rather than deescalating them. This heavy-handed federal intervention appears to be an overreaction aimed at generating dramatic visuals rather than genuinely addressing any threat to public safety. The deployment seems designed to provoke outrage rather than promote law and order. We request that the president reconsiders this rash decision, respects the state's assessment that additional forces are not required, and allows California to handle the protests through existing state and local law enforcement capabilities. Unilaterally overriding the governor's opposition needlessly heightens conflict when calm deescalation is called for.
