Urgent: Investigate and Secure Compromised Social Security Data

4 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!

I am writing to express my grave concern over the recent whistleblower complaint alleging a massive breach of privacy involving the personal data of over 300 million Americans. This alarming situation demands immediate action to protect our citizens and hold those responsible accountable. According to the complaint filed by Charles Borges, chief data officer at the Social Security Administration (SSA), through the Government Accountability Project, former senior officials from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) team, now at the SSA, have copied sensitive data including Social Security numbers, names, and birthdays to a private cloud account. This action reportedly violates existing laws and regulations, putting an enormous amount of private information at risk of theft. The severity of this breach cannot be overstated. Career cybersecurity officials at the SSA have described this decision as "very high risk," even discussing the possibility of having to re-issue Social Security numbers if the cloud server is breached. The copied database, known as NUMIDENT, contains comprehensive information submitted in applications for Social Security cards, and reportedly has fewer security measures than the SSA's standard protocols. I urge you to take immediate action on several fronts: 1. Launch a thorough investigation into this incident, including the decision-making process that led to this unauthorized data transfer. 2. Ensure the immediate retrieval and secure deletion of all copied data from unauthorized locations. 3. Hold accountable those responsible for this breach, including considering the removal of implicated DOGE officials from their positions. 4. Implement stricter data protection measures to prevent future occurrences. 5. Consider legislation to strengthen privacy protections for sensitive personal information held by government agencies. This incident is not isolated but part of a concerning pattern where DOGE and former administration officials have been accused of disregarding privacy protections around sensitive personal information. We must act swiftly to restore trust in our government's ability to safeguard our most sensitive data. The potential consequences of inaction are dire. Millions of Americans could face identity theft, financial fraud, and other serious repercussions if this data falls into the wrong hands. We need decisive action now to protect our citizens and uphold the integrity of our government institutions. I look forward to your prompt attention to this critical matter and eagerly await updates on the steps being taken to address this unprecedented threat to our national security and personal privacy.
