Investigate and Pursue Impeachment

I urge you to open a rigorous investigation into President Trump’s conduct and pursue impeachment. The question is not whether any single act is an egregious as the attempted coup on January 6. The issue is whether a sustained pattern of abusing presidential power has injured the constitutional order and the public’s ability to hold its government accountable.
Many reported actions in this term warrant investigation as potential impeachable offenses: profiting from the presidency; deploying the National Guard in American cities over local objections; using federal immigration enforcement in ways that raise serious concerns about due process and unchecked authority; starting a war without Congressional authorization; seeking control over spending Congress has authorized; abusing the pardon power; retaliating against law firms and universities; and restricting or punishing the press. Reporting has documented contested troop deployments, use of the DOJ and the IRS against organizations and individuals that criticized him, and government actions affecting journalists and media access. Congress should establish the facts, determine who directed these actions, and assess whether they violate law or constitutional limits.
The danger is broader than any one order or episode. A whole-of-government effort to weaken independent institutions, punish political opposition, constrain the press, and undermine fair elections would amount to an assault on democratic accountability. That pattern itself deserves constitutional scrutiny. In Federalist No. 65, Alexander Hamilton described impeachable offenses as political in nature, involving injuries done to society. By that standard, conduct that undermines representative government and the constitutional balance of powers is not ordinary political disagreement.
Do not rule out impeachment because conviction in the Senate may be unlikely or because the process will provoke partisan conflict. A serious investigation can uncover evidence, inform the public, protect witnesses, and establish a record for future accountability. Refusing to investigate would signal that a president may test constitutional limits without consequence.
Please use Congress’s oversight authority now, preserve relevant records, compel testimony where necessary, and keep impeachment available if the evidence supports it. The duty to defend the Constitution cannot depend on whether doing so is politically convenient.
