An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Halt Illegal Military Strikes and Oppose Expanded Presidential War Powers

I am writing with grave concern regarding the escalating crisis of U.S. military strikes on civilian vessels in international waters. As of October 23, 2025, nine civilian ships have been attacked by U.S. forces in the Caribbean and Pacific, resulting in dozens of fatalities. These unprovoked assaults not only violate international law but also represent a dangerous expansion of executive power that threatens the very foundations of our democracy. The situation has reached a critical point. Pentagon lawyers are sounding alarms about the legality of these attacks, underscoring the absence of congressional authorization or clear legal justification. Even more alarming is the White House's attempt to legitimize these actions retroactively. The administration is now circulating legislation that would grant President Trump unprecedented authority to use lethal force against anyone he unilaterally deems a drug trafficker, as well as to attack countries he claims support such activities. This proposed legislation is nothing short of an attempt to circumvent constitutional checks and balances, effectively giving the President unchecked power to wage war without congressional oversight. It is a direct threat to the separation of powers and could lead to further loss of innocent life and international condemnation. I urge you to take immediate and decisive action. First, demand an immediate halt to these unauthorized military strikes. Second, vocally oppose and vote against any legislation that would expand the President's war powers. Third, initiate a congressional investigation into the legality of the attacks that have already occurred. Furthermore, I ask that you support a War Powers resolution to formally terminate these unauthorized strikes and prevent future occurrences. Call for the resignations of Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio for their roles in defending and promoting these illegal actions. Lastly, given the severity and repeated nature of these constitutional violations, I strongly urge you to support articles of impeachment against President Trump and move to convict him for his persistent defiance of the law. The stakes could not be higher. Our nation's commitment to the rule of law, both domestically and internationally, is being tested. Your leadership is crucial in restoring the balance of power, protecting innocent lives, and preserving America's standing in the global community. I implore you to act swiftly and decisively on this matter of utmost national importance.
