Oppose the SAVE America Act and Protect Voting Access

I am writing to urge you to oppose the SAVE America Act (H.R. 22/S.128), which is scheduled for a House vote during the week of February 9th. This legislation would create unnecessary barriers that would prevent millions of eligible Americans from exercising their constitutional right to vote. The new version of this bill requires voters to present proof of citizenship both when registering to vote and when casting a ballot. This would disproportionately harm specific groups of Americans. More than 21.3 million Americans lack immediate access to documentary proof of citizenship, and over 140 million do not have a passport. Sixty-nine million women who have taken their spouse's last name do not have a birth certificate matching their legal name. Citizens of color are three times more likely than white citizens to lack required documents such as birth certificates or passports. The bill would also create hardships for elderly Americans, who are among the least likely to have passports, and for military members serving abroad who would struggle to meet in-person registration requirements. Disabled people, who already face significant voting difficulties, would encounter even more stringent barriers. Transgender people who have changed their names to reflect their gender identity may be denied new passports and become ineligible to register. Despite claims to the contrary, there is no evidence of widespread voter fraud that would justify these restrictions. When the House passed H.R. 22 in April 2025 with a 220-208 vote, it did so without addressing the real-world impact on eligible voters. I ask that you oppose the SAVE America Act and protect the voting rights of all eligible Americans. Our democracy depends on accessible, fair elections, not on creating obstacles that disenfranchise millions of citizens.
