An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Kill the Big Ugly Bill

28 so far! Help us get to 50 signers!

I am writing to express my deep concerns regarding Donald Trump's proposed "Big Beautiful Bill.” While the president continues to try to sell his latest big lie about the success of the Iran strike as a distraction, the Big Beautiful Bill percolates in the Senate. At its core, this bill is a prime example of the very worst aspects of politics: reckless spending, inadequate prioritization, and a failure to address the needs of those who need help the most. This bill is littered with provisions that serve the interests of the few while failing to provide meaningful support to the many. One of my primary concerns is the sheer scope of the bill’s financial commitments. The bill includes billions of dollars allocated to defense spending, corporate tax cuts, and various pet projects, all of which seem disconnected from everyday Americans' struggles. Where is the funding for healthcare, education, and infrastructure, critical areas that need attention more than ever? By pouring vast sums of taxpayer dollars into bloated defense contracts and tax breaks for large corporations, Trump is continuing a pattern of prioritizing the wealthy and powerful over the hardworking middle class. Moreover, the bill fails to address this country's growing divide between the rich and the poor. Instead of utilizing taxpayer funds to support social safety nets like healthcare, housing, and job training, the omnibus bill further entrenches the status quo, leaving vulnerable communities behind. While it claims to be a solution for America's problems, it largely perpetuates systemic inequality and widens the gap between the haves and the have-nots. Finally, this bill represents a failure of leadership. It is a hastily cobbled-together package of compromises that does nothing to unite the country or address our most pressing issues. Rather than seeking thoughtful, bipartisan solutions, Trump has chosen the easy route: a bill that appeases special interests and delivers little tangible benefit for everyday Americans. In conclusion, the "Big Beautiful Bill" may have been presented as a bold move, but it is an exercise in mismanagement and misplaced priorities. We deserve better than this. We elected you to do better than this. We need policies that serve the public good, strengthen our social safety nets, and ensure a sustainable future for all. It’s time to reject this flawed bill and demand real change. Parliamentarian MacDonough has stripped out multiple high-profile items – especially those around food aid, court limitations, financial regulations, and environmental rollbacks- that do not comply with reconciliation rules and require either removal or 60 Senate votes to proceed. of the provisions in the bill have been disallowed by the Senate Parliamentarian under the Byrd Rule. This is an opportunity for the Republican Party to stand up and do the right thing. A yes vote on this bill as it stands will be a mark of shame that will not easily be forgotten.
