As your constituent, I urge you to demand accountability for Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin’s coercive threats against state election officials and his handling of the department’s “Unlawful Voter Initiative.” He needs to be removed from office.
Recent reporting on a federal whistle-blower account raise serious concerns about this initiative’s legality, accuracy, and administration. According to the account, Homeland Security assigned agents to review at least 40 voters each day, allowing roughly 12 minutes per case. Agents relied on questionable data that may incorrectly identify naturalized citizens and other eligible voters as noncitizens. The report also alleges that agents used individuals’ personally identifying information to access state voter-history systems, even where state websites restricted searches to the individual voter.
The initiative appears to rely on immigration identifiers that remain in federal records even after a person becomes a U.S. citizen. If accurate, these practices could generate false positives and expose citizens to wrongful investigation, voter removal, prosecution, or immigration-related consequences.
Secretary Mullin has also threatened state and local election officials with criminal penalties, imprisonment, or loss of federal assistance if they do not comply with DHS directives concerning voter rolls and election systems. Such threats are especially troubling when the underlying data and methods are disputed. Election administration is primarily conducted by the states. Federal agencies may assist when authorized by law, but they should not use coercion or conditional funding to impose policies beyond their lawful authority.
I urge you to:
1️⃣ Suspend the initiative until its legal authority, data sources, methodology, and error rates are independently reviewed.
2️⃣ Require DHS to disclose its matching criteria, search procedures, records-retention policies, and safeguards against wrongful identification.
3️⃣ Ensure that no voter is removed from a roll, referred for prosecution, or subjected to immigration consequences without reliable evidence, notice, and a meaningful opportunity to respond.
4️⃣ Investigate whether agents were instructed to violate state database restrictions or make false representations.
5️⃣ Protect the whistle-blower from retaliation and conduct congressional hearings with Secretary Mullin and responsible DHS officials.
6️⃣ Fully fund CISA and the Election Assistance Commission so election security is strengthened through assistance, not intimidation.
If the allegations are confirmed, I urge you once again to support Secretary Mullin’s removal and impeach him. In my view, his previous threats against state election officials for DOING THEIR JOB is sufficient grounds for this, even absent the shocking actions undertaken in the so-called "Unlawful Voter Initiative." Election integrity requires accurate evidence, lawful procedures, and respect for voters and state officials, not wasting taxpayer dollars paying staff of questionable competence to spend 12 minutes per voter illegally logging into websites.
