Urgent Need for USDA Workforce Restoration in the Farm Bill

I am writing to express my grave concern regarding the current state of the United States Department of Agriculture. Recent reports have revealed a systemic and existential staffing crisis within the agency that is directly undermining the stability of our nation's food supply. The current administration has committed a significant unforced error by aggressively shrinking the federal bureaucracy through mass dismissals and voluntary buyouts, with no thought or plan as to how this will affect the nation's farmers. While the goal of efficiency is understandable, the result has been the gutting of the very offices that farmers rely on to survive. Across the country, local USDA offices are operating with skeletal crews or are closed entirely. This has created a bottleneck that prevents hardworking producers from accessing the low-interest loans, grants, and technical assistance they need to operate their farms and businesses. When a farmer in North Carolina cannot secure a loan to expand his business, or a producer cannot get a simple signature from a conservation technician, the entire agricultural economy suffers. We are witnessing a dangerous loss of institutional knowledge and local expertise. By stripping away the staff who understand the specific needs of their regions, the administration is creating insurmountable barriers for new farmers and leaving veteran producers stranded during an already dire economic period. Our farmers grow the food that feeds this nation, yet they are being denied the basic government support they were promised. It is unacceptable that the mission to trim the bureaucracy has come at the expense of our food security and rural viability. As Congress deliberates on the upcoming Farm Bill, I urge you to ensure that this legislation includes specific, enforceable measures to rectify this crisis. We need targeted funding to restore USDA staffing levels, incentives to recruit new specialists to rural offices, and protections to ensure that essential field services are not sacrificed in the name of administrative downsizing. I ask that you prioritize the restoration of the USDA workforce to ensure that our farmers have the support they need to keep our nation fed.
