Oppose the SAVE Act - Protect Voting Rights and Democracy

I urge you to vote against the SAVE Act when it comes before the Senate. This legislation, which the House passed for the second time in April 2025, is a solution in search of a problem that does not exist. It is already illegal for noncitizens to register and vote in federal or state elections, and voters in every state are already required to affirm or verify their citizenship status when registering. The true purpose of this bill became clear when Kristi Noem stated it would ensure that "the right people vote" to "elect the right leaders." This is not about election security. This is about voter suppression designed to keep one party in power regardless of the will of the people. Free and fair elections are the foundation of our democracy, and this bill threatens that foundation. The SAVE Act would create significant barriers for eligible American voters. Military families would need to present documentation every time they re-register when they move. Families recovering from natural disasters who lost their documents would face additional burdens while rebuilding their lives. Americans who have changed their names, including married women, would need to secure updated documentation before voting. The racial impact is particularly troubling. Citizens of color are three times more likely than white citizens to lack documents such as birth certificates, passports, naturalization certificates, or certificates of citizenship. Two-thirds of Black Americans do not possess a passport, compared to half of all American adults. This bill addresses a nonexistent problem while creating real obstacles for millions of eligible voters. I ask you to stand up for democracy and vote no on the SAVE Act. Our elections are already secure. What we need is protection for every eligible citizen's right to vote, not additional barriers that disproportionately harm specific communities.
