Protect Our Polls Act: Safeguarding Civilian-Run Elections

As your constituent, I urge you to support the Protect Our Polls Act. This legislation strengthens longstanding guardrails that protect Americans’ ability to vote free from intimidation, coercion, and armed interference. For more than a century, federal law has limited the use of troops or armed federal forces at polling places—because voting must be administered by civilian officials in a calm, predictable environment where voters can cast ballots without fear. That is why current law already restricts deployments to polling sites, with only a narrow exception tied to repelling “armed enemies of the United States.” In practice, presidents have never used that exception to send troops or armed agents into polling places, including during major national crises. That history underscores the importance of preserving the principle: elections should not be protected by military or federal enforcement power. This bill closes loopholes that could invite dangerous escalation. The Protect Our Polls Act would limit the President’s ability to deploy the military or federal law enforcement to polling locations, election material, or election sites. It would also require a specific congressional approval process before any deployment under the narrow exception—along with transparency to Congress through intelligence and legal justification, deployment plans, and evidence that state and local authorities cannot address the threat on their own. Those steps ensure that any extraordinary action is both necessary and subject to democratic oversight. Just as critically, the act reinforces that federal agencies should not access or interfere with election records and election administration processes preserved under federal law. That helps prevent attempts to intimidate voters, disrupt polling, or undermine public confidence. When politicians suggest using armed federal force against elections, the result is to erode trust and deter lawful participation. Supporting this bill is a clear, commonsense step to preserve civilian control of elections, protect ballot integrity, and ensure that every voter can safely exercise their constitutional right. Please stand up for the rule of law and co-sponsor—and actively support—the Protect Our Polls Act.
